Tips for teaching hearing impaired learners

When I had a hearing impaired learner in my classroom for the first time, I had no clue on what to do. Mainly because my school focuses on communication. Students go there to learn how to speak English and most of our activities are orally, so you can see how confused I was. I had no previous notice about that, so I couldn`t prepare myself in advance. I thought it was impossible to teach that student, first because I don`t know Brazilian sign language enough to have a conversation, second, I had no idea (one more time) on what to do. I didn`t pay attention that what I needed the most was try adapting all my activities so that the student wouldn`t feel left out. Therefore, that`s what I did. This process was a class to class struggle. It didn`t happen so fast. But in the end of the year, I had a good feeling about this student`s learning process. During the semester I never excluded the student if I had a group work or pair work. We had an interpreter in class which helped a

Hearing Impaired students and teachers` challenge

Hello everyone!! Let`s start discussing about hearing impairment and some challenges we have in the classroom. I believe everybody knows what hearing impairment is, but let`s summarize that it refers to the inability or limited ability to hear. There are differences within these two concepts, because some students have low or high hearing loss. Some of them make use of devices to help them listen. There are different reasons as well of why they are like this. Some were born like this, or developed this loss through some kind of accident, or exposure to noise, and etc. It`s always good to know these information about our students. What about the challenges? A question for you! How is it in your school? Are hearing impaired students educated in a different room apart from the regular hearing students? or are they all together? This happens all the time and everywhere. In Brazil, most hearing impaired students are in the same class as the regular hearing ones, howeve

But first...

Hello everyone!! This blog, as so many others, aims to help English teachers wherever they are. And we are EVERYWHERE! In this blog I will try to share ideas that we can use in the classroom. My first posts will be about teaching English in a communicative approach for deaf students. This is a real challenge, but it`s possible. Why am I doing it? Well, a couple of years ago, I had to face this situation and I had no clue of how I was going to accomplish that. So, in the beginning it was not easy.. but in the end I got it, or at least I got some part of it. I still need to learn a lot about teaching English to deaf students in the same class where I have regular students. Therefore, I decided to create this blog. While I continue studying about it, I can also share new findings with everybody. Feel free to give suggestions and/or comments whenever you feel like it.
